Cada 9 de agosto se celebra el “Día Internacional de los Pueblos Indígenas” con la finalidad de sensibilizar a la población con respecto de las necesidades e importancia que tienen estas comunidades en la preservación de la diversidad cultural y biológica.
A su vez el 2019 fue declarado como el año internacional de las lenguas indígenas, la lengua es un recurso que a través de los años ha llevado a la civilización humana a preservar las tradiciones y costumbres de sus ancestros, de igual manera fortalece la autonomía e identidad de los pueblos indígenas. Alrededor del mundo existen 7000 lenguas que en su mayoría son habladas y fueron creadas por pueblos indígenas, un 40% de éstas se encuentran en riesgo de desparecer.
La Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Agricultura y la Alimentación (FAO) sostiene que los pueblos indígenas y tribales son actores fundamentales en la lucha contra la pobreza, el hambre y todas las demás formas de malnutrición, así como para la promoción de prácticas agrícolas sostenibles. La agricultura es el sector que proporciona el 40% de los empleos a nivel mundial y un 15% de los pueblos indígenas se encuentran en condiciones de extrema pobreza, si se reforma el sistema agrario actual y se prioriza la sostenibilidad de los alimentos en un mediano plazo se estaría contribuyendo a mejorar las condiciones de vida de comunidades rurales e indígenas a su vez que 925 millones de personas tendrían una fuente de alimentos diversificada y segura.
El México que conocemos ahora está conformado por un mosaico de tradiciones, costumbres y culturas construidas a través de los años por los pueblos indígenas que en nuestro territorio habitan .Sin embargo la combinación de factores económicos, políticos y sociales han orillado a muchas de las comunidades indígenas a abandonar su lengua y adoptar el español. La discriminación que impera en nuestra sociedad afecta de manera directa a estas comunidades destruyendo su sentido de pertenencia.
Es por ello que Xilotl tiene un profundo compromiso con las comunidades indígenas con las que trabaja al sur de nuestro país. El pueblo Tzeltal es una rama que desciende de los mayas y que conforma la mayoría étnica en el estado de Chiapas, se definen a sí mismos como “ba-tzil kóp” que significa los de la palabra originaria. Nuestro principal objetivo es contribuir a mejorar las condiciones de vida de dichas comunidades así como brindarles herramientas para que ejerzan la defensa y aplicación de sus derechos, de igual forma brindamos asistencia para mejorar la situación alimentaria de las comunidades a través del uso de prácticas agroecológicas.
